WKS901: Tesla Coil Design and Operation

Learn about design methods and operating principles of a traditional spark gap Tesla coil!

Mathematical relationships and empirical measurements will be used to gain a greater understanding of high voltage electronics. We will be demonstrating these concepts on a giant homemade Tesla coil.

This is the perfect workshop for high-voltage electronics enthusiasts and for those who want to build their own Tesla coils.

About the Instructor: Mark Barlow teaches electronics classes at TechShop Pittsburgh. WKS115: Knife Making

Knife-making is an art of patience and craft. Learn how to make a knife from scratch using a combination of high powered tools and traditional knife-making techniques. In this class, you'll learn the basic fundamentals and tools for grinding an edge and heat treating metal. You'll also experience a live demo of the waterjet, the machine used to cut your knife blank from a sheet of steel. After receiving your knife blank, you'll get a matching acrylic handle that will be cut out using the laser cutters. With raw materials in hand and knowing the basics of knife-making, you'll have the ability to freely work on your knife with the provided equipment.

Project: Knife

Prerequisite(s): None

This Make-it, Take-it workshop is open to both members and non-members of TechShop.

Note: This is not a Safety and Basic Usage class. To learn more about waterjet cutting, check out our Waterjet Cutting SBU class offered regularly.
